17-year-old high school student driving BMW killed in crash on U.S. 68

SPRINGFIELD TWP. — A local high school student was killed in a crash over the weekend.

Dylan Frederick, 17, died after being flown from the scene of a crash on Springfield Xenia Road on Saturday afternoon.

Frederick was a student at the Springfield-Clark Career Technology Center (CTC) and Shawnee High School, Springfield-Clark CTC confirmed.

In a statement to News Center 7, a spokesperson for Springfield-Clark CTC said their school community was grieving the loss of Frederick.

“Our focus right now is on supporting our students and staff during this incredibly difficult time. There is a crisis team in place with internal counselors, our mental health team, counselors from neighboring districts and therapy dogs to support students and staff as they process this tragic loss,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

Rich Hopkins lives about a quarter of a mile up the road from U.S. 68 and Springfield Xenia Road. As he was outside doing yard work on Saturday, he could see and hear an emergency response at the intersection.

“I seen the lights flashing and sirens,” Hopkins said. “There was some kind of accident at the corner there, at the stop sign.”

The Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) said Frederick failed to yield while turning left from a stop sign on Springfield Xenia Road onto U.S. 68.

His BMW was hit by a Ford F-350, and both vehicles were sent off the road.

A medical helicopter flew Frederick to the hospital, where he died.

A 16-year-old passenger in the BMW was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The passenger of the truck was treated at the scene for injuries, and the truck’s driver was not hurt.
