Sergeant James Byron said that this was a large birthday party. During the party, an altercation broke out, and multiple people fired shots.
Mays and four other men in their 20s were shot. The other four men were taken to local hospitals and are still being treated, according to police.
“It is a tragic situation for every single person involved in this case, and our hearts go out to the families of the victims,” Police Chief Allison Elliot said.
Police confirmed this happened on a normally quiet street. They also emphasized that there were more than 100 pieces of evidence collected at the scene.
As reported on News Center 7 at 5:00, this is now the eighth homicide in Springfield this year. That is more than the total from last year.
Investigators are urging the community to come forward with any information that could help them find those responsible.
“We really urge you and encourage you to please speak up and talk to us,” Elliot said.
