City offices to reopen after bomb threats shut down public offices in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD — City, county offices, and schools in Springfield will reopen today after bomb threats forced them to close on Monday.

As reported on News Center 7 Daybreak, the threat caused a lot of lot disruptions for residents due to shutting down the schools, courts, city hall, and other county offices.

Clark County offices started getting threats talking about pipe bombs, said Governor Mike DeWine on Monday morning.

Governor Dewine said that the essence of the threats was that the Haitians should get out.

“These are similar to bomb threats that have been received in other states, other locations, and similar type of rhetoric. I have no idea if it’s the same people,” said DeWine.

News Center 7 crews saw the Dayton Bomb Squad using a robot to grab hold of a black duffle near the front entrance of the Clark County Municipal Court.

The FBI said that they are investigating and are aware of several hoax threats in Central Ohio, including Springfield.

“The FBI is now involved in this. In two different locations, duffel bags were were found in the city in those two locations,” said Governor DeWine.

Parents of students at Springfield City Schools said they didn’t know what to think when the district sent them a message to come get their kids.

Jessica Thornton said, “I’ve heard multiple things. Bomb threats, somebody threatened the schools, who knows?”

She said she also heard rumors that ICE was banging down the high school doors.

“All I want to do is get my kids and go home,” said Thornton.

Thornton hopes that investigators track down the source of the threats.

Springfield police confirmed that they found no suspicious devices or substantiated threats.

The Department of Homeland Security moved in what it calls surveillance towers outside of the schools.

The towers are located outside of Springfield High School and Roosevelt Middle School.

The Ohio Department of Public Safety will use the equipment to help keep students and staff safe.

Dedicated safety teams will also search all 17 of the school district’s buildings before school starts.
