News Center 7’s Malik Patterson said the group can keep half the money it raises. That goes towards ammo, accessories, and time at the hunting range.
Over 400 people attended the Shawnee Territory Chapter Auction on Saturday. Two students were honored for their achievements.
Jasper Tall was one of two students recognized. He helped save a classmate who passed out back in March.
“I was like, half asleep, and I guess adrenaline kicked in,” he said. “I was like, what’s going on? Basically, and then just kind of acted from there.”
He told Patterson that he did not know that he was going to be honored.
Tall was given a shotgun as part of his honor program.
Patterson spoke with an excited Tall.
“Real good, actually, real happy,” he said.
Caden Church was also honored. He is blind but has been wrestling and now wants to hunt.
“I’ve always kind of wanted to do it, but I just do because I know, like, people that do it, and Jesse Jamestown, a lot of people like to hunt,” he said.
Church’s father said it will be a learning curve for Caden. But he’s up to the challenge.
“If I get my first one, it’s like, I’ll be nervous shooting it,” Caden told Patterson.“ So, I may, you know, flinch, which causes your bow to move, which means you might miss it.”
Caden said that he will try to hunt his first deer before the end of the year.
Then, once spring arrives, they will go after turkeys.
Students thought that Saturday’s event was a success.
