Stolen vehicle rams police cruiser, leads police on chase before slamming into pole

DAYTON — A chase of a reported stolen vehicle ended with it slamming into a pole on Wednesday.

Dayton Police Lieutenant Daniel Perkins said officers located a stolen vehicle in the area of N. Gettysburg and Hoover avenues around 3:15 p.m.

“The vehicle rammed a police cruiser and then fled at a high rate of speed. Officers initiated a pursuit due to the felonious assault,” Perkins said.

Initial emergency scanner traffic indicated speeds in the chase reached over 80 mph.

The chase lasted around eight minutes and ended when the vehicle crashed into a pole near the intersection of N. Main Street and 5 Oaks Avenue.

As reported on News Center 7 at 5:00, the red vehicle crashed into an RTA support pole so hard that the engine flew out of it.

Our crew on the scene saw first responders cutting the roof and door of that vehicle in an effort to get the driver out.

One person was seen getting put into an ambulance and being taken from the scene. Perkins said it was the driver, who is only described as a male. He suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

N. Main Street was shut down in the area of the crash until around 5:40 p.m.

The Dayton Police Department’s Professional Standards Bureau and Traffic Services Unit are both investigating the chase and crash.
