The Logan County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a social media post that 911 dispatchers received a 911 call reporting that a 28-year-old man who had been out on a canoe had gone into the water and had not surfaced.
As reported on News Center at 6:00 on WHIO.com, it happened at the Adventure Trails campground at the 3200 block of State Route 840 in Bellefontaine.

When a sheriff’s deputy arrived, they radioed that the man was still unaccounted for and under the water. Bystanders had entered the water to try and rescue him, according to the sheriff’s office.
Two deputies removed their gear and jumped into the water in a rescue attempt.
“They swam roughly 30-40 feet out into a large pond where a canoe was overturned and floating away. They were able to bring an adult female and male to the shore, who had jumped in as well in an attempt to rescue the 28-year-old male,” the sheriff’s office said.
Several attempts were made to rescue the 28-year-old man, but they were not successful.
A witness told deputies that the man’s girlfriend were both camping this weekend at Adventure Trails. Her boyfriend took her daughter on a pleasure ride in a canoe.
“Her daughter began to scream after the canoe began taking on water. Her mother then got into a kayak and paddled out to their location. She was able to retrieve her daughter from the water; however, her boyfriend had gone under the water. She reported she thought he was underneath the overturned canoe,” the sheriff’s office stated. “She brought her daughter back to shore and then swam out to the overturned canoe.”
The 28-year-old man did not have a life jacket on when he went into the water.
