“The preliminary findings of the autopsy are consistent with evidence found at the scene by detectives, indicating that a dog inside the house bit the infant several times, after knocking over a bassinet that the child was in,” the Preble County Sheriff’s Office confirmed on Thursday.

As previously reported, the sheriff’s office was called to a home in the 4000 block of Camden West Elkton Road for reports of an unresponsive infant.
When first responders got to the scene, the infant was pronounced deceased.
Sheriff Mike Simpson told News Center 7 on Thursday that this was a “tragic event for this family.”
As shown on News Center 7 at 5:00, Simpson declined to identify the breed of dog the family owns, describing it as a medium-to-large-sized dog.
“Our hearts and prayers go out to this family for what they’re having to go through now, and just can’t even imagine having to go through that,” Simpson said.
The sheriff told News Center 7’s Mike Campbell that he believes the parents of the child have a good support system.
Simpson also confirmed the sheriff’s office took control of the dog.
“We have it quarantined because of the dog bite thing,” he said. “We will keep it quarantined and then will work with [the family] and see what their decisions are going to be.”
The death remains under investigation.
