The fire was reported at the center, located on S. County Road 25A, shortly before 11:30 a.m.

iWitness7 viewer video showed heavy black smoke from the scene being visible from Interstate 75.

News Center 7’s John Bedell spoke with Russ Scherer, of Tipp City. He was checking out the emergency response on Wednesday after his wife texted him photos of it.

“She said she heard a real loud ‘Boom’ and, and then she (sent) the pictures from through the house over,” he said.

Our crews could fire crews from at least Tipp City and Vandalia at the center for much of Wednesday afternoon, as well as what was left of the semi-trailer and some of the numbering above the loading docks that had melted from the heat of the flames.

Tipp City Fire told News Center 7 that its investigation is still open, but that the flames may have started on the refrigeration unit on the front of the refrigerated trailer that was docked against the building.

They added that smoke got into the section of the building used for cold food storage, and it required “extensive ventilation.”

Firefighters said the Ohio Department of Agriculture is working with Meijer’s Food Safety Team to evaluate “the integrity of the building’s inventory.”

The department said Miami County EMA and Hazmat found no significant release of any hazmat that needed to be cleaned up beyond some absorbent tools they used.

They said most of the diesel fuel either burned up in the fire or stayed in the tanks.

News Center 7 reached out to Meijer for a statement. A spokesperson sent the following statement on Wednesday afternoon:

“We appreciate the quick response of local fire departments who safely extinguished the truck fire earlier today at our Tipp City distribution facility. No one was harmed and we have resumed normal business operations.”
