UPDATE: At least 17 people forced out after fire in Dayton

DAYTON — UPDATE @ 3:30 p.m:

At least 17 people will have to find somewhere else to stay after a fire in Dayton early Friday.

The fire was reported in the 400 block of Westwood Avenue at midnight.

The fire displaced everyone living on both sides of the duplex, according to the Miami Valley Ohio Chapter of the American Red Cross.

A shelter was set up at Mt. Enon Baptist Church for those impacted.

Seventeen people stayed at the shelter.

INITIAL REPORT:

Firefighters spent five hours on the scene of a house fire in Dayton early Friday morning.

The fire was reported in the 400 block of Westwood Avenue at midnight, a Montgomery County dispatch supervisor confirmed.

TRENDING STORIES:

When the first responding crews arrived at the scene, they found heavy fire conditions throughout the second floor and attic, according to Assistant Dayton Fire Chief Brad French.

“Crews initially attempted to conduct operations inside the structure for fire attack and search, but were ordered out to a defensive position by the Incident Commander due to the extent of the fire conditions and the risk of imminent structural collapse,” French said.

No injuries were reported, and the American Red Cross was called to assist those displaced by the fire.

The cause remains under investigation. We’ll provide updates as we learn more.
