The remains were found by a brush clearing crew doing work behind a home in the 300 block of S. Xenia Street on Monday morning, according to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.

“These have been here for a substantial period of time,” Lieutenant Kristopher Shultz, detective lieutenant and commander of the criminal investigation division of the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, said.

Detectives from the sheriff’s office are investigating with the assistance of the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Crime Scene Unit.

Investigators interviewed the residents of the home and the work crew. They said there are a lot of possibilities as to where the remains came from and who they belong to.

As reported on News Center 7 at 5:00, early speculation indicated the remains could be those of a child. News Center 7 asked Shultz about that.

“It doesn’t appear to be a child, at least a small child, but we don’t know what the age of the subject is,” Shultz answered. “We don’t know the gender, the race.”

Neighbors like Lori Blumenschein were shocked to learn of the discovery.

“Oh my goodness, yes, this is even, this stuff doesn’t happen here, you know?” she told News Center 7.

The case remains under investigation.
