Is it safe to get both Covid booster and flu shots at once?

DAYTON — Flu season is coming as well as a possibility for people to still catch Covid-19 this fall.

With both of those viruses circling at the same time, people are wondering if it is safe to get a flu shot and Covid-19 booster all at once.

News Center 7′s Kayla McDermott spoke to Doctor Roberto Colon of Premiere Health and he said it’s perfectly safe for someone to get both of the shots at once.

He tells McDermott he recommends people get one in each arm to deal with the soreness and that everyone from ages 12 and up can get the new Omicron specific booster shot and nearly everyone, even babies, can receive the flu shot.

The only people who should not be getting the shots are those who have an allergy to the medicines, according to Colon.

McDermott asked Colon about any side effects from getting both shots at once and if it should be a tough recovery, he said it should not be a problem.

“There has been no evidence that getting both of these are going to lead to an augmentation or an increase in the types of symptoms that they are having,” he said.

McDermott says for those who do not get vaccinated or even if you do, there is still a chance of getting both viruses at the same time.

She reports the side effects should be much less severe for someone vaccinated than someone who gets both viruses and zero vaccines.

Some people might be hesitant to get the new Covid-19 Omicron specific booster shot since they may have experienced tough side effects from previous Covid-19 vaccines.

Doctor Colon told McDermott that should not be the case with this booster shot and that any minimal side effects you may feel will be nothing compared to getting the flu and Covid-19 at the same time.

“The chances that both of those are going to lead to a more severe disease is much greater than the chances that both vaccines are going to lead to more side effects,” said Colon.

You can get both a flu shot and Covid-19 booster shot at a local pharmacy such as CVS or Walgreen’s.
