As reported on News Center 7 at 11:00, the fire happened at the Lakewoods apartment building at 980 Wilmington Avenue around 7:30 p.m.

Dayton Fire Department District Chief Bob Barnes said the fire was in one unit on the second floor.

One person was hospitalized, but they’re expected to be okay.

News Center 7’s Taylor Robertson talked with residents who were either worried for their animals or family members in the building.

“My kittys up there! And a little bit of my money, and I thought, ‘Oh, my money burned up!’ I don’t know what I’m gonna do,” Terry Black said.

Black said he left to grab dinner and came back to fire trucks, medics, and police blocking Wilmington Avenue.

“It got real scary then because I’ve been in a fire before. Over at Park Manor, my apartment burned up. It was from my C-Pap machine,” Black said.

Black was living at the apartment building last year during a fire in September. This incident left three people without a home.

Barnes said Kettering and Riverside fire crews responded to the scene to help.

An RTA bus also came out to give people a warm place to sit.

“We’ve allowed most of the residents to return back. Just those that live on the fire floor, until we get the investigation through and everything, we’re keeping them out,” Barnes said.

Barnes added that most of the contents inside the affected unit are burned.

However, Black is grateful the flames didn’t spread to the rest of the building.

“Thankfully, everybody lived through it,” Black said.

Barnes said they will be out at the apartment building for a few hours, cleaning up and working to determine exactly how the fire started.

News Center 7 will continue to follow this story.
