Clark County Sheriff Christopher Clark told News Center 7 on the scene Tuesday morning that a woman called 911 to report that a man had been banging on her front door.

The woman said she recognized the man as her neighbor, 47-year-old Joseph Vaughn, and opened the door because he said he needed help from “an unseen and unknown assailant.” That’s when she said he forced his way into her home.

He was naked and had a firearm.

“Did fire off three rounds inside the residence,” Clark said. “She was uninjured, he was uninjured.”

Clark said that before forcing his way into his neighbor’s home, Vaughn entered the home of a family member next door. No one was home, but it did appear that he fired shots inside there as well.

When deputies got to the scene, they were able to get the woman out of the home safely through a bedroom window.

After that, Vaughn came out of the home with the gun. As reported on News Center 7 at 5:00, he dropped it and charged at deputies.

“If he had used that weapon in a threatening manner, we would have had a different outcome today,” Clark said. “But luckily, he did not. He did surrender.”

Clark said it appeared like Vaughn was having “some sort of either intoxication issue, or some sort of mental health issue.”

Vaughn was taken from the scene to the Clark County Jail. He’s facing aggravated burglary, burglary with a weapon, and abduction charges.
