Woman safe after rescue at John Bryan State Park

MIAMI TWP., Greene County — A woman is recovering after she was rescued from a state park in Greene County on Monday.

Around 3 p.m., firefighters were called to an injured person at John Bryan State Park.

As reported on News Center 7 at 11, Roger Geers said he and his wife, Judy, walk the trail at the park once or twice a year and were trying to get down to the river.

“She says, ‘I can’t go any farther, I just can’t,’” Roger said.

He said she got dizzy and sat for around 20 minutes.

They tried to walk a few more times, then decided to call for help.

Roger said cell phone service was spotty, so he had to search for a signal.

Then he used a Diet Mountain Dew bottle as a marker so crews could find them on a trail.

“That’s the only way I could think of that I had as good marking,” Roger said.

Although she did not fall, Judy was at the bottom of a nearly 40-foot ledge, Miami Township Fire Chief Jim Cannell said.

The safest way to get her out was a rope rescue.

“We actually had to rappel down to her on ropes. Then we took the stretcher down and then we had to design a lifting system,” Cannell said.

It took crews nearly three hours to rescue her, but Cannell said it’s something they train for.

“We get quite a few calls for people passing out, having medical emergencies. It’s very easy to fall down there if you’re not careful,” he said.

Roger said even though they trusted them, it was nerve-wracking watching crews pull his wife to safety, now he’s glad she’s okay.

He said he and his wife are grateful to emergency crews.

Cannell encourages hikers to let people know where they are, carry a cellphone, and stay hydrated.
