Tony Jackson, Jr., 33, was in court on Tuesday to learn his sentence for the February 2025 killing of 34-year-old Matyka Brown.
“There is some justice because he’s behind bars, but 27 years is not enough, it’s not,” Melinda Grissom, Brown’s mother, said.
Jackson reached a plea deal with prosecutors to avoid a trial and, possibly, a longer sentence. Court documents show he pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated murder.

“He’ll still be kind of young when he gets out,” Grissom said. “My daughter, she won’t be here.”
As previously reported, Dayton Police received 911 calls from Brown’s neighbor. They told dispatchers that Brown’s 14 and 9-year-old daughters ran across the street because a man broke into their home and shot their mother.
Police said one of the girls witnessed the second shot.
Brown’s family said the attack was no surprise.
“He planned this,” Grissom said. “He told her he was going to do it, and he executed his plan.”
As shown on News Center 7 at 5:00, Grissom said Jackson served a five-year sentence for aggravated robbery at a W. Third Street business. She said he then strangled Brown in October 2024 after serving that sentence, but somehow only served another three months or so for that.
He got out two weeks before killing Brown.
“I don’t understand that because after he did what he did to my daughter in October, he should not have been home,” she said. “If he was not at home, he would not have had the opportunity to do this.”
Jackson’s plea deal was for 20 years to life, but a mandatory gun specification meant three more years. A judge added four more because he was on probation at the time of the murder. His first chance at parole will be in 27 years.
