At the time of the crash, a Dodge Ram pulling a farm-related trailer was driving north of Hilllgrove-Fort Recovery Road, and a Kia Sportage was driving east on Peters Road.
A preliminary investigation found that the Kia Sportage failed to stop at a stop sign and crashed into the Dodge, according to the spokesperson.
After the initial crash, the trailer disconnected from the pick-up truck and both came to a rest in a nearby field.
The spokesperson said the Kia hit a ditch before stopping.
The 65-year-old driver of the pickup truck was treated on scene and released with no apparent injury.
The driver of the Kia, later identified as Bryan Adkins, 46, of Hollansburg, was trapped and had to be extricated by mechanical means, the spokesperson said.
CareFlight took Adkins to Miami Valley Hospital, where he is currently listed in critical condition.
Authorities reportedly found suspected fentanyl, methamphetamine, and PCP on Adkins before he was flown to the hospital, the spokesperson said.
This crash remains under investigation by the Darke County Sheriff’s Office.
