Police and prosecutors said they followed phone calls and texts that brought Dews to a gas station and then to Kammer Avenue off James H. McGee Boulevard, where he was attacked and killed.

Steven Dews Sr. described the nightmare of Nov. 30, 2024, when police officers knocked on his door.

They’d come from the scene, where they found his son’s vehicle crashed into an RTA pole.

“When they told me to call the coroner, I felt like my heart was ripped,” Dews said.

Witnesses told police they’d heard gunshots, then noticed the vehicle.

The victim’s father had to tell his children that their brother had died.

“Just listening to the screams over the phone was very horrific,” he said.

Family members put up a memorial for Dews Jr. within hours of the shooting.

Dayton police detectives gathered information quickly and arrested Jackson and Hastings.

Hastings eventually pleaded guilty to murder in exchange for other charges being dropped. She was sentenced to 18 years to life in prison.

Jackson took his case to trial and never admitted guilt or showed remorse, even after a jury convicted him.

He got 32 years to life in prison.

Dews said his son’s death is senseless and made a plea to the community.

“This is my hope that all these senseless killings will stop. Cease fire! Cease fire! That is my desire,” Dews said.
