As reported on News Center 7 at 6:00, some customers have noticed duplicate charges for something they only purchased once.

Tim Motko said he’s been a Wright-Patt Credit Union customer for 20 years and has never had this issue.

He realized there was a problem after he went to buy medication for his mother, but couldn’t.

Motko said his account was in the negatives because of a duplicate charge, each for $149.08, for his yearly Amazon Prime subscription.

“I knew something was wrong. So right away, I thought it was Amazon. So, I called them and talked to them for quite a while, and they tracked it down. They told me that no, we only got one payment of $149,” Tim Motko said.

Several other customers told News Center 7 that they are experiencing the same issue.

Motko said he called Wright-Patt Credit Union to figure out what was going on.

They reportedly told him, “This was some kind of a Visa card glitch with debit cards and credit cards, and it was happening everywhere.”

Motko said he’s retired, and the missing money is putting a strain on his budget.

“My thing was, I need that $149. And she wasn’t sure when she could get it back to me,” he said.

His story lines up with more than a dozen other customers who reached out to News Center 7, but no one has gotten answers.

“If you take my little bit of money and add it to everybody else’s, it got zapped. You know, who’s somebody who’s making money on all that? This money’s floating somewhere, and that just ain’t fair,” Motko said.

The credit union told News Center 7 that this is a Visa issue and it’s affecting financial institutions across the country.

Visa has acknowledged the problem, but said it’s complex writing in a statement “We have resolved an issue that caused a small number of duplicate transactions between April 11 and 12 for some cardholders. We have provided clients with details to help them correct duplicates.”

News Center 7 asked Visa to provide a timeline on when people can get their money back, but we haven’t received a response.

We will continue to follow this story.
