TROTWOOD — A man is in custody and his child is safe after a long standoff in Trotwood on Friday.

Police were called to Willwood Apartments around 3 p.m. because a mother was trying to get her child back from the father.
“Subsequently, the father had a warrant for his arrest,” Trotwood Police Chief Erik Wilson said.

For hours, our News Center 7 crew watched as officers in tactical gear moved through the apartment complex.
A loud siren came several times from a SWAT truck, followed by an officer on a megaphone.
“It seemed like he was trying to use the baby as leverage to get him off the situation,” Jordyn Wright said.

Four hours after the standoff started, police arrested the suspect.
An officer reunited the young girl with her mother.
“I know she’s very worried about her child because the baby’s being used as a hostage,” Gennieyah Macdonald said.
The young girl’s mother did not want to talk on camera but said EMS checked her daughter and said she was okay.
Police did not officially name the suspect, but Shawn Wheeler was booked in the Montgomery County Jail by Trotwood police, according to online jail records.
