All that’s left is damage from the SWAT standoff, like holes punched into windows and a broken front door.
Neighbors told News Center 7’s John Bedell that they noticed the emergency scene on Wednesday morning.
“It’s wild. I came out, saw police blocking off parts of the street, and just couldn’t believe it,” Eric Heeg said. “My wife sent me a message and said that they were sending tear gas in through the windows.”
Monte Litteral shared a video with News Center 7.
“I looked up and there they were. And I watched them bust the door down with their machine,” Litteral said.
Litteral and other neighbors said Clark County Municipal Court Bailiffs were at the house trying to evict the man last week.
Clark County property records show the home was sold earlier this year and the deed transferred to the new owners seven weeks ago.
“Well, he’s been like that, you know, not wanting to leave and everything else,” Litteral said.
Springfield Police Chief Allison Elliott said court bailiffs previously tried to serve an eviction, and her officers were asked to help on Wednesday.
Baliffs made multiple attempts to serve 38-year-old Zachary Hammann for warrants for intimidation and criminal trespass.
Officers saw Hammann was armed with a sword inside the home, according to a media release sent Wednesday evening.
SWAT officers went into the home, and Hammann was taken into custody after being tased.
He was booked into the Clark County Jail after being checked out by medics.
It brought the end that neighbors had hoped for.
“Actually, have to go get my kids from school here shortly. So not something I want them to be privy to,” Heeg said.
