Occasionally, the neighborhood will smell like gas.
“You can smell gas in this whole area when the wind is blowing this direction,” Rebecca Quinones said.
Rebecca Quinones and Ritika Kurup have both lived in the Yankee Trace community for over five years.
It wasn’t until two years ago that they started consistently hearing the sound.
“Sometimes 12 or more hours, and you can’t sleep,” Quinones said. “It rattles our windows. It rattles people’s dishes. People get headaches. We can’t sleep.”
The Yankee Street Power Plant is just beyond some trees.
Keith Feemster, manager of Rockland Capital which operates the power plant, says the plant is a regional transmission plant for PJM Interconnection and runs power grids from Illinois to Virginia.
Feemster says the plant has been running more recently, they just turn it on and off for PJM. He says there is not much they can do about the noise.
But it’s not just about the noise for the Yankee Trace residents.
“My child has woken up with headaches. My child has missed school in the morning,” Kurup said. “I’m very concerned about the health impacts.”A noise reader was used in the neighborhood, and it measured around 70 decibels, equivalent to a construction site.
“We would like the noise to stop. We would like to sleep,” Quinones said. “We would like to be able to sit on our patios in the summer, when the weather’s nice and enjoy our neighborhood.”
Rockland Capital told News Center 7 they are working with PJM to come up with a long term solution. They are planning a trip to meet with the Centerville Business Development director to discuss the issue.
Rockland Capital says the gas smell is not coming from the plant.
