Springfield Fire Department Chief Jacob King said the fire was in the back of the home when crews arrived on scene, but it was spreading quickly.
Firefighters immediately ran inside the burning home to start looking for two children who were trapped inside.
“As our guys are going in, you know, I’m looking, and I have fire blowing out all four sides. 75% of the first floor is involved in the fire,” King said.
A mother and two of her children were able to escape the flames before crews got on scene, but she couldn’t get back inside to get the two other children.
Firefighters found one of the children trapped, and they pulled them out of a back window.
“As a second crew was making an entry on the other side of the house through a window. Conducting multiple searches, we eventually were able to locate the second child that was in the house,” King said.
He said the door to the kids’ room was partially closed.
“And the primary fire area that held a lot of the fire products away from that room, which we found that survivable space in the middle of the house,” King said.
CareFlight took the two children to Dayton Children’s Hospital with serious injuries.
The mother and two other children were hospitalized, but they’re expected to be okay.
“Our crews pushed themselves. We ended up with four firefighter injuries. Two received burns from their search efforts. In that heavy fire conditions, one received a cut injury, and another one fell through the floor. He was stuck; he fell through to his armpits from the first floor of the basement,” King said.
But King said to their department, it’s worth it.
“So, we have two kids that their mom can now go see at Children’s, versus not being able to go see them again,” he said.
While finishing up at the scene on Broadway Avenue, firefighters were called to a kitchen fire on East Southern Avenue.
King said a woman was moving into the home when the flames started.
No one was hurt in this fire.
“So she won’t be able to move in right away, at least today, it will need some repairs, some drywall, kitchen, and water damage,” said King.
The cause of both of these fires remains under investigation.
